Darn Tootin'
oh man, i made one the best pruchases of life just recently.
the other day i was at a record store with my friend, Meredith. for some reason, it hit me that i wanted to look at the conutry and western music section. while Meredith browsed through the Dolly Parton albums, i happened upon Kenny Rogers, 20 Greatest Hits. i knew that i had to buy this CD. i mean, look at it for crying out loud.
i really only knew two songs on the disc, Lady and The Gambler. but i was excited to hear the rest. and boy howdy, i have not been disappointed. since buying that CD, i have found a new favorite song every morning when i drive to work. Friday it was Ruby Don’t take your Love to Town. Damnit that song is good. Saturday it was Coward of the County. Man alive, i couldn’t help but hear Tommy’s story over and over again. Today it was Love or Something like It. Wow. i just put my CD player in my car on repete and sang along as i slowly waited through the traffic of the 101.
and then just yesterday, i pulled into a gas station to fill up and there were all these lowriders and pimped out rides blasting these loud bass beats that obscured the lrics of the song. my windows were down and they all stopped and stared as this nerdy white boy cruises by singing along to his new favorite CD. “you got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run...”
i could hardly contain my laughter. how completely bizarre that moment in time was. a hipster dumbshit listening to the Gambler while amidst mint green lowriders bouncing up and down.
that CD is sooo good. all of these songs are flippin’ rad! i use to turn my head or cover my ears when country would be in earshot, but over the past year, i have found a new love for it.
keep your rap, your hip hop, your dance music, your poppy repetetive bass beats, your new alternetive college underground. give me a slide guitar and a song about a man pharalized in a hospital bed while his girl puts on make-up to go out on the town anyday.
“if i could move, i’d get my gun and put her in the ground...”
