flaming carrot meets captain america

this last weekend i attended the san diego comic-con. i had never been before and i was very happy i went. my good friend and fellow comedian danforth france invited me to tag along with himself, mike hollingsworth (also a funny comedian/friend) and a girl named anna (she's an animator). we got there and met up with our good friend/spasmodicly funny josh fadem and stephanie escajeda, one hilarious stand up comedian. ...jezzz, all my friends require explanations.

i strolled in and met abraham lincoln, played some unreleased video games, ran into an old college professor, witnessed the meetings of greats: flaming carrot shaking hands with captain america, green lantern posing with hellboy and a predator, r2-d2 in a parody skit with bender from futurama- but wait there's more. i also overheard a father yelling at his son for losing his best yu-gi-oh card in a tournament, watched 52 costumes paraded across a stage in competition, learned of the new star wars movie title (revenege of the sith), overheard a father praising his son for winning a great yu-gi-oh card in a tournament, fought a martial arts expert with my twin dragon, josh fadem, and of course read a few comic books.

i probably spent too much money. mostly on the drinking of fine spirits, and gas station food items. but worth it.

i can't wait until next year!

they call it: being happy

it was 8:09pm last night when plucky little chad fogland was called to the famous "hollywood Improv" main stage to do a 7 minute comedy stand up set.  he was the first of a showcase of 10 with famous person david spade closing out the night. 

it was very rad.  "the hollywood Improv" is the place to do stand up.  you may remember seeing the stage on the TV- "E!'s eveing at the improv"? 

yes, i had to take the bullet and go first, but it really didn't bother me.  and traditionally, that is one of the harder things to do, but i think i did alright.  i had the crowd laughing and i think i faired rather well.  it felt great to be on that stage.  as lame as this may sound, it felt very natural, like the first time i ever did stand up comedy.  that first time was just a tuesday open mike back in savannah, georgia at a place called "the jokeyard".  i'm pretty sure it doesn't exsist anymore.  i had never done stand up before and i got 5 minutes.  i went up there and did some very rough and early versions of bits that i still do today- bits like 'adolf's tut' and 'final thought'.  nothing really went over great that night, i had a few giggles, but i had never felt so at home, so in the right place, so natural than i did when i was up there behind that mike.  it was that same feeling last night at "the Improv".  it really felt great.

i don't know what i'm trying to say.  i guess today, i'm feeling good.  today, i'm walking a little taller.  today, it's good to be chad fogland.

chad likes movies

yeah! what a grand year for the movies. last night i saw one of the funniest films i ever seen in my life, "anchorman". it was hilarious! such a great comedy film. wonderfully absurd, daft and rip-roaring at my sides with belly-aches. so happy it makes me, just thinking about it.

but wait- just a week or so ago i saw the "spider-man 2". ok, ok. yes i'm a hugh comic book nerd guy. hell, i studied the medium in college for chirst sakes. i am not ashamed. this was a great action/adventure flick that actually drew alot from the orginal stories from the comic book series. kudos, sam raimi.

but then there was "nepoleon dynomite", "dawn of the dead", "fahrenheit 9/11", "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind", the re-release of "monty python's life of brian" and of course the theaterical release of the honk kong world blockbuster, "shaolin soccer". oh! so happy to be a avid film going. "nepoleon dynomite" was a wonderful independent film with numberous remeberable scenes and lines that still make me giggle. the remake of "dawn of the dead" was as great as the original. a perfect zombie horror film. one that i thought wasn't going to be as good because the zombies can run- but surprise, surprise. "fahrenheit 9/11" was relevent and poinet, with a good anti-bush push. "eternal sunshine..." was another in the charlie kauffman classic films with original and amazing concepts and storylines. just brillant and super keen. "shoalin soccer"? well, it was great, absurd fun. i'm a sucker for those martial arts flicks and godzilla movies.

but hey kids, judge for yourselves. if you haven't seen any of these gems, then check them out. if they make you laugh, mad, or whatever, at least they just didn't make you ...blank.

almost revenge of the nerds

so last night was the airing of "scream play" featuring my best friend, david johnson, and myself, chad fogland. if you missed it, fret not. i believe the E! channel plans on airing it a few times a day until this sunday. sunday will be the next show in the line-up.

anywhoos, it was pretty neat. i think dave and i did a fine job bareing our bright white skin while swimming with 50,000 leaches. (truth be told: those weren't the blood sucking kind of leaches. they did find they're way into many of the crevases of the contestants. dave returned to the hotel that night and found five new friends. lucky of me, i only had two friends and they were in my swimsuit's pockets only.) but i thought it was great how the editing of the show really envolked the nerdness/geekdom of dave and i. you might think that dave and i would have sour feelings towards the new zelander and little annie, our defeators, but we don't. in all honesty, they are really cool people and they told us that they'd take us out to eat with thier winnings. ...if they don't, then i will hate them. if they do, i'm ordering the lobster/steak/shimp/baked alaska plate cooked on a fire made from historic civil war bonds and served on a solid gold plate with $100 bill garishings. Then a monkey shall dance for my amusment. why the monkey? well don't tell anyone, but i'm going to say that i can only eat if there is a monkey dancing. (giggling like a little girl)

if anything, we did win a trip to london. i'm very excited about that. plus, i plan on documenting the trip because of my own vainity. perhaps i'll put it up on the site?
